Front-Engine Era

Images of life in the 1950's typically involve Elvis, tail-fins, and waitresses on rollerskates. So it's easy to forget the fucking insanity of the road racing that was going on during this period. The combination of high powered cars and open-road events would never be seen again. Europe was still just recovering from the war, and the amount of danger and carnage that everyone had lived through made for a casual attitude toward driver and spectator deaths.

Mille Miglia

Ferrari showed up for the Mille Miglia with two new cars, the 4-cylinder 860 Monza and the V-12 290 MM. Both shared the same Type-520 bodystyle, so they were virtually identical on the outside.

1957

As far as single years go, 1957 was among the all-time greats. The was a fierce 4-way battle between Ferrari, Jaguar, Maserati, and Aston Martin. Fangio returned to Maserati after apending 1956 at Ferrari putting up with Enzo's manipulative bullshit...

Hawthorn/Collins

Perhaps the greatest Bro-mance in racing history was that between Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins during their years at Ferrari.

Ferrari 250 GT LWB "Tour de France"

One of the earliest race-ready GT cars from Ferrari was the Long Wheel Base GT that had bodywork designed and built by Scaglietti. Keeping with tradition of the time, this car was named after their victory in the 1956 French road rally. There were eventually four slightly different versions produced, and they are identified by the number of slats in the rear roof pillar section. The later versions had "streamlined" headlights.
