Ferrari followed Porsche's lead and produced 25 copies of the 512S. This car was competetive, and Mario Andretti scored a famous win at Sebring in 512S. This car was raced with longtail bodywork at LeMans, and became the 512M in 1971.
Also in 1970, a separate championship for 2.0 litre sports prototypes was started, called the European Sportscar Championship.
Matra took their F1-based 3-litre V-12 and created the 650 Prototype, which took the season-opening Buenos Aires event. This series of eleganltly-styled blue prototypes would lead the French revival at Le Mans.
In 1970, the FIA/SCI designation for Group 4 sportscars was changed to Group 5. (From 1966-1969 Group 5 had been a seldom-used category for highly modifed touring cars from Group 1 and Group 2.)
The new Group 4 category was for factory-approved specialized versions of Group 3 GT Sport Cars. A minimum of 500 examples was needed to qualify for this category. An example of this class is the Porsche 914/6, which was a special edition of the Porsche 914. This class is often referred to as "GTS", and the modern "GTS" category is not unlike this but without the production minimums.
Who flipped over the bathtub? No really, this car is really ugly but in a cool sort of way.

Enzo had the works team concentrate on the 312PB 3-litre Prototype and let the Semi-Works teams run the 512M at Le Mans.
The 5 is for 5-litre, the 12 for 12 cylinder, and the M is for Modificato, which means that Ferrari provided an upgrade kit for owners of the 512S.
